How Many Appointments Are Needed to Get a Dental Crown?

Dental Crown San Clemente, CA

If you are considering getting a dental crown, you might want to know how many appointments the procedure will require. The good news is, depending on the process, you might not have to wait that long. Usually, it takes two visits. Keep reading to learn more about what you can expect.

How the dental crown placement works

The process of getting a crown starts with preparing the teeth. Then the dentist will create the restoration or have the lab do so. Finally, the patient will receive the crown. Usually, the patient will require two visits so that the process can get completed.

First, the dentist will prepare the patient’s tooth to get the crown. The patient has to have the tooth shaped, including removing part of the damaged portion. Even some of the healthy tooth has to get removed. The dentist’s amount will depend on where the tooth is and what material the patient will have for the crown.

Sometimes, the patient will have up to three-quarters of the tooth taken out. On the other hand, the dentist might need to build up the tooth if there is not enough structure. Filling material is useful for building up the area as needed. Finally, the dentist will create an image of the site using an impression.

The lab can create the dental crown using that information. The patient will receive a temporary crown at the end of the first office visit. That protects the tooth. With the right care, it can last until the next appointment.

The first office visit might take around an hour and a half or so. Still, most patients can finish within an hour or so. The amount of time will depend on what the patient needs. Some patients might need to remain there for longer than an hour to have the teeth built up again. That way, the crown will fit the teeth better.

The second office visit

A patient might wait around two weeks before the lab finishes the dental crown. The dentist will take off the temporary crown and clean the area. Then the dentist can check the crown’s fit and make some adjustments, as necessary. One way of doing that is to floss between the place to see that it is not too tight.

The dentist can fix any issues and recheck them as needed. Finally, the dentist can bond the dental crown to the tooth using dental cement. Usually, the process takes around 20 to 30 minutes, but it could take longer. Still, the patient will go home with a well-fitting restoration.
